The Adult Scale
The Adult Scale is for use with adults over the age of 18 years who have sustained a burn injury.
The Adult Scale consists of 53 items which cover 14 individual scales:
- Wound/scar healing
- Physical well-being
- Wound/scar treatments
- Wound/scar dissatisfaction
- Avoidance behaviours
- Social situations
- Friendships
- Work
- Family
- Self-worth
- Negative mood
- Intimacy
- Trauma symptoms
- Positive growth after a burn injury
We recommend using the full scale, however individual subscales can be used if necessary.
The Young Person Scale
The Young Person Scale is for young people aged 8 to 17 who have had a burn injury and consists of 51 items which cover 9 individual scales:
- Wound/scar discomfort
- Physical well-being
- Wound/scar treatments
- Social situations
- Self-worth
- Negative mood
- Wound/scar dissatisfaction
- Romantic relationships (for young people who are aged 12 and over)
- Positive growth
We recommend using the full scale, however individual subscales can be used if necessary.
The Child Scale
The Child Scale is for children ages 8 and under, and is completed by a parent/carer.
The Child Scale consists of 32 items which cover 6 individual scales:
- Wound/scar treatments
- Physical well-being
- Wound/scar discomfort
- Parent dissatisfaction with child’s wound/scars
- Social and emotional difficulties
- Social and emotional well-being
We recommend using the full scale, however individual subscales can be used if necessary.
The Parent Scale
]The Parent Scale is for parents who have a child (of any age) that has experienced a burn injury.
The Parent Scale consists of 40 items which cover 8 individual scales:
- Physical well-being
- Confidence in helping with wound/scar treatment
- Social situations
- Partner relationship
- Self-worth
- Negative mood
- Parent dissatisfaction with childs wound/scars
- Positive growth
We recommend using the full scale, however individual subscales can be used if necessary.
Using the CARe Burn Scales
The CARe Burn Scales can be used in clinical or research practice in order to identify health support needs and therapeutic progress for patients and family members affected by a burn injury. We encourage health professionals to use the full scales with their patients/clients, however the subscales can also be used individually.
No changes to the questions within each scale is permitted. This includes changes to the text or the response categories.
The scales can be accessed by clicking on the link related to each scale. Instructions on how to score each scale can also be downloaded from each scale section.

Translations
The CARe Burn Scales were originally developed and tested in English by a team of researchers at the Centre for Appearance Research at the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol, with the support of NHS burns services, support organisations and people affected by burn injuries from across the UK.
The English versions of the scales are being used across the UK and internationally.
The scales have also been translated and tested, following a rigorous process involving translation and back-translation. Versions are currently available in Finnish and other translations are in progress:
